Extension Service Offers Canning and Food Handler Classes

COCOA, Fla. – The University of Florida Brevard County Extension Service and the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences will offer three canning classes and a food handler certification class this month.

•“Preserving Foods: Water Bath and Pressure Canning” will be held Thursday, January 12 from 6 to 8 p.m.

•“Preserving Foods: Jams, Jellies and Pickling” will be held Thursday, January 19 from 6 to 8 p.m.

•“Preserving Foods: Freezing and Drying” will be held Thursday, January 26 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Each of the canning classes introduces participants to the joys of preserving their own foods, with hands-on experience and an opportunity to take food home. The cost to attend is $35 each.

The food handler certification class and test fulfills the requirement for food service industry managers. It will be held on Monday, January 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at a cost of $165.

All classes are held at the University of Florida Brevard County Extension Office in Cocoa.

The Extension Service is also accepting applications for volunteers with the Master Food & Nutrition Program.
